[pewslideshow slidename=anim2]

You must choose one of the following topics to research and write about:

(b) Cell Phone Use/Texting While Driving

(b) Cell Phone Use/Texting While Driving
(i) Purpose
The purpose of this option for assignment 1 is for you to research the negative effects that cell phone
use/texting has on driving performance. The effects that cell phone use/texting has on performance
has to be the central focus of the assignment. A standardized and concise format will be used for the
written document (see below).
(ii) Things to Include in the Document
The written document must include information on (at least) the following things. There should be
separate sections for each of these items:
– a title
– introduction (i.e. why is this an issue?, why important to look at?)
– brief overview/executive summary
– detailed description/summary of what the literature has found regarding driving performance and
cell phone use/texting while driving
– suggestions for what should be done to reduce the negative effects (i.e. design changes?,
behavioural changes?)
– concluding statement
– reference list

(b) Cell Phone Use/Texting While Driving
(iii) What has to be Submitted?
For both of the topics (disasters or cell phone use), you must submit the following:
– no more than 3 pages total (1 for a signed Academic Honesty page (download from CLEW website
for the class)), and 2 pages single spaced for all content, including pictures and the reference list

– copies of all references used in the project (to be returned after marking)***
* can submit paper or electronic copies, but both must be done on time
(iv) General Formatting and Considerations for Written Document
The following basic formatting is required for the written document for both topics:
– use single spaced, 12 pt. font text throughout with 1 inch margins
– for any academic journal article references, use the following abridged format: Durkin et. al. (2002). J. Biomech. 3:201-213. In this format, no title is included and only the first author is cited.
The short form for the journal is all that is needed. It is ok to use internet references for images and
content, but refereed articles in journal or books are to be used when possible. You always want to go
after the most credible and original documentation possible to support your work. If you use a
textbook, include first author, year, title of text, and pages. Do not cite lectures .. find the primary
source!! A value of zero will be assigned for referencing if you do this. Include references within Human Factors and Work Performance 95-362 5
the body of the text in parentheses where possible. Numbered references can also be used to save
space. Always use your own words to summarize a point. Just changing words around from a source
and including it into your work is still plagiarism.
– any tables and figures need to be numbered and referenced by number (e.g. Figure 1) from the body
of the text. Table captions are to be included above tables, and figure captions below figures.
Pictures are figures, so they all need to be numbered and referenced in order accordingly. The
reference in the text should occur before the table or figure is shown.
– remember that two copies are required. I will keep one copy and the other will be handed back with
feedback once marked.
– a copy of all references cited in your project must be handed in with the project and will be given
back after grading is completed. Make sure that complete copies of each paper, parts of texts,
websites, etc. are made as you do your research so that you dont have to scramble near the due date.
– if you choose to use internet references, please include links in a Word document and hand
that in with the assignment.
– any pages over the assigned page limit will not be marked.
– please do not attach an additional title page
