Guidance notes
This assignment asks you to select a poem or poems for stylistic analysis. If you are in any way unsure as to the suitability of your chosen poem or poems, contact your tutor in good time for advice.
Whatever you select, bear in mind that even short poems can be subjected to detailed analysis, and choosing a longer poem or more than one poem to analyse may make it difficult for you to answer
within the word limit.
In your analysis you are expected to demonstrate your understanding of what you have learned from the course materials including Chapter 2 of the second set text for the course, The Art of English: Literary Creativity and in particular Chapters 4 and 5 of Short, M. (1996) Exploring the Language of Poems, Plays and Prose. The elements of sound and rhythm you explore will be determined by your choice of poem or poems, but you are expected to demonstrate understanding of alliteration, assonance, rhyme and metre in your essay, even if your chosen poems do not exemplify these elements.
You should start with an introduction discussing stylistic analysis and the different perspectives on the nature of poetic language. You should then use your own selection of poetry to illustrate the points you have made.
Please remember to attach a copy of your selected poem or poems to your TMA as an appendix. The content of the appendix will not be included in the word count.
Remember to cite your sources properly when you refer to scholars associated with any theories you refer to. If you are still not sure how to do this, please refer to the booklet ‘Academic writing:
acknowledging your sources’ sent to you at the beginning of the course.
