“This unit is designed to further your understanding of the legal and ethical issues affecting the teaching of dance in the private sector.
You will be required to research and review current government legislation (including guidance offered by Arts Council England and the Department for Education) governing the teaching of dance in the UK and consider its appropriateness as a means of ensuring the maintenance of teaching standards, professional conduct and health and safety within the private dance industry.
You will also be required to study the Codes of Practice of a broad selection of dance organisations and consider whether voluntary self-regulation offers a more appropriate means of ensuring the maintenance of standards.
Finally, you will be required to consider the role and potential of the quality assurance procedures of an organisation such as the Council for Dance Education and Training and consider their influence and effectiveness within the private sector.
Throughout this unit, you are encouraged to seek parallels in your own country of residence and to review the legislation, regulatory practices and codes of conduct within which your own professional practice is located (UAE for me).”

1. Study the essential reading listed for this unit and evaluate the extent of government legislation affecting the teaching of dance within the UK private sector. If you work outside the UK, use this as a basis for comparison with your own country of residence, identifying similarities, ?gaps? or differences (UAE – DUBAI FOR ME).
2. Consider the Code of Professional Conduct and Practice for Teachers of Dance 2008/2009 of the Council for Dance Education and Training and the Codes of Practice of a broad range of other dance organisations (including any dance teaching society or official body of which you are a member). Make a note of key features of these regulatory frameworks.

3. Using the above, create a table recording similar and different requirements of each Code of Conduct and consider the relevance of each requirement in relation to your own professional values and teaching practice. What do you consider the term ?professional? to mean and what are your expectations, in terms of professionalism, of your colleagues and peers?
