Does identifying different phases in a negotiation help us understand and develop the negotiation? Why or why not?

The essay must be in essay format (not report format) – this means complete sentences and paragraphs and NO dot points, headings or subheadings.
1.Introduction: a succinct outline of the aims, purpose and structure of the paper and short summary of conclusions reached. An introduction in papers of this length is usually only one or two paragraphs. Your introduction must include your argument and a brief discussion of why you will argue this way.

2.Body of the paper: the analysis. The social sciences technique of analyzing involves more than just describing what happened. In this course, it is used to explain why events occurred, and suggest implications of the events. The purpose of conceptual literature generally in the social sciences is broadly twofold: to predict and/or explain. The analysis in these papers must use the negotiation conceptual literature to answer the question. It is also useful to critically evaluate the literature according to your experiences of negotiation in the classroom – did they differ from the analysis in the literature? If so how?

3.Some concluding statements, which summarize your overall evaluation. Rely on your own opinions, but back them up by referring to the literature, and to your previous analysis of the dispute.

4.Conclusion: a paragraph which restates your argument and sums up your principal conclusions in the paper. The conclusion does not introduce any new material or quotes.

Your in-text citations and reference list for your essay should be consistent. You must use a minimum of 10 academic sources that are preferred to not be published before 1999 (Only articles from 1999-2010). There is a handout on the course website in the Assessment section which explains the different types of sources. Please speak to your tutor or the convenor if you are still unsure.

We prefer the Harvard citation method and set out in the following manner – author, date: page number(s) – please also note the punctuation is important) for citations and reference lists.

I don’t mind the use of non-academic sources in your essay but you must still include a minimum of 10 academic sources for your essay to be acceptable.
