Introduction (2 pages)
Research Questions/Hypotheses (3 pages)

Select an appropriate criminal justice research topic. Your instructor will work with you to select an appropriate research topic. In the first 2 to 4 pages of your paper, you will introduce your topic, formulate a research question and at least one hypothesis, and provide the justification or motivation for the research proposal.

The first page of your paper should be a title page which includes the title of your research proposal, your name, your instructor?s name, and the date. The introduction to your research proposal will begin on the second page. You will explain what you are going to study and why this issue is important (statement of the research problem). You will need to propose what you will do and how your research will contribute to the literature in your area of study. After introducing your topic and describing the importance of the topic, you will formulate a research question related to your topic that you want to answer. Next, formulate a hypothesis that provides an answer to your research question (what you think you will find if you conducted a research study on your topic). A well-written hypothesis is similar to the ?thesis? of a paper: it provides a statement that can be tested. Your hypotheses should be presented in just a sentence or two (remember, it is an ?idea? and not a ?fact?).

Literature Review (8 pages)

The next part of your paper addresses the related research on your topic. One reason we conduct a review of the literature is to make sure that our research proposal has not been done yet! The literature review is a discussion of studies, research reports, statistics, etc. that are related to your research topic. You should include a review of the most pertinent and recent research articles from professional journals. Begin your literature review as soon as possible as this process takes time! Provide a review of at least TEN research articles on the topic you have selected. You will want to select articles that are scholarly and/or empirical. A good literature review should tie previous research together in some logical way and should acknowledge the importance of your intended research. The literature review should provide a synthesis of the articles you select rather than a series of article summaries. A literature review tells us what we already know, while leading us in the direction of what we have yet to learn (i.e. what your research proposal will address). You are essentially filling a gap in the literature.

Research Design (6 pages)

The next section of the paper will address HOW you plan to go about answering your research question (research methodology). This section of the paper should include an extensive discussion of the research methodology that you intend to use to study your topic. You will design a study allowing you to test your hypothesis. For some projects, a quantitative design (i.e. survey) is the best choice while for other projects, a qualitative approach (i.e. interviews) is more appropriate; some projects may incorporate a mixed methodological approach. In particular, you should describe the sample; including why you selected this sampling strategy and how you will generate your sample. Discuss possible sources of bias in your sample. Describe any problems that you may encounter in your design or procedures. In this project, you also need to outline the measures you will include in your research design. How will you measure your variables? A discussion of validity, reliability, and limitations should be included.

Remember, you are not going to actually use this data and research methodology to test your hypothesis. You must make an argument for how well your chosen design could test your hypothesis and address the research question in the paper. The strength of your entire paper is intimately connected to the coherency of your research design. It is very important that you discuss the strengths and limitations of your design.

This section will be about six pages and should include:

? Who are you studying? (sample)
? When are you studying? (time frame)
? Where are you studying? (police department, courts, prison, college)
? How will you collect the data? (survey, field research, secondary data)
? What are some limitations/complications? (problems, ethical issues)
