Task 1:

An annotated bibliography is a useful tool in research and writing. As you read various books and articles on your chosen topic, you will write an overview of each source and evaluate how useful it is to you and your topic. This process can help you develop a working plan for your final paper, which will be completed in the next course of study task.

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations from the books, articles, and other resources you use to research a topic. Each reference in your annotated bibliography is followed by an annotation that summarizes the source information and evaluates its usefulness.

In this task you will be identifying the topic you want to research and creating an annotated bibliography from the sources you will use to research the topic.

A. Identify a topic (suggested length of 2–3 sentences) that you want to research.

B. Prepare an annotated bibliography of at least 10 credible sources that you plan to use in your research by doing the following:
1. Provide a full APA-formatted citation for each source.
2. Provide an annotation (suggested length of 150 words) for each source in which you do the following:
a. Summarize the information presented in the source.
b. Evaluate the quality of information of the source.
3. Provide the correct in-text citation after each annotation as it would be used if you cited the source in your final paper.

During the research process, you will gather different types of information from a variety of sources. It is often easy to become overwhelmed with the details and miss the big idea of a source as you go deeper into the research experience. Being able to synthesize distinct ideas that are scattered throughout a source and being able to create a meaningful point will help you focus your attention on the main ideas that you will present in your final paper. Likewise, paraphrasing content from a source will help you thoughtfully and purposefully consider a passage’s overall meaning, which will again focus your attention on the main ideas.

A. Choose one article or a portion of one article from a credible source (minimum length 5 pages; maximum length 10 pages) that you will include in your research on the topic that you have chosen in RLAT Task 1. Submit a copy of the article along with your assignment submission.

By now you have selected and narrowed your topic, conducted preliminary research on your topic, and prepared an annotated bibliography. You have a lot of information gathered, and now it is time to begin thinking about how you will shape your paper to share your information with others.

Good organization is essential for clear and effective writing. Effective writing is organized around a central idea and keeps readers focused. It is important to have an organizational plan in place before you begin writing so that your writing can follow a logical path and communicate effectively with your audience.

The anchor of your paper will be your thesis statement. The thesis announces your topic and indicates what points you want to make about your topic. The plan for your paper is your map for how you will lead the reader from point to point. Your plan may be a visual organizational plan, a formal outline, or a working outline.

A key component in the writing process is revision. Revision includes rearranging the order of information, substituting information by taking something out and putting something else in its place, replacing entire sections, or starting over completely. Editing involves making changes in the language or the format of a document to facilitate reading. Proofreading means finding and correcting surface errors in spelling, punctuation, usage, and sentence structure. All of these types of revisions work together to turn your paper into a powerful final reading product.

In this task you will document your research paper revision process. Additionally, you will write a short summary of the changes you made and the revision strategies you used to make the content and format changes.

TASK 5:

Writing a research paper gives you an opportunity to explore a topic of special interest, to research that topic, and to formally organize your research findings in writing for an academic audience.

Through your preparation work, you have established a thesis statement and have planned a clear organization of your main points. Your research is complete, and the details have been worked into your writing plan. You have pulled it all together in a draft and have revised the paper’s organization, ideas, and words.

In this task you will write the final draft of your paper. The writing tone for your research paper should be formal and appropriate for academic writing. The paper must follow APA documentation guidelines, and any sources that you cite in the paper must be included in the reference list. Likewise, any source in the reference list must also be cited in your paper.
