For this paper I had to observe a preschooler for 2 hours, when you get to part 2, just make up examples about a girl named Halle if needs be. INTRODUCTION — Summary of Social Competence: 2-3 pgs. Part 1: Using your course material, textbook and so on, write a thorough description of a socially competent child (aged 10 and up). What are the emotional, cognitive, and moral characteristics of a socially competent child? Consider skills and abilities involved in such things as peer interactions, communication, problem solving, decision making, self-control, conflict resolution, emotion regulation, and/or adaptability (these are just a few examples; you may include other areas as well). Part 2: Reflect on whether you saw the aspects of social competence you discussed in the preschool-aged child(ren) you observed. Why and why not? What aspects of social competence seemed particularly immature in preschool-aged children? What were characteristics you observed that were precursors to social competence (or incompetence)? Provide specific examples. You will see that social competence is not fully established in preschool-aged children, but you can already see differences in children’s levels of competence. The remainder of your paper should focus on how parents can help or hinder the growth of a child from the enthusiastic preschoolers that you observed to the socially competent children you described in Part 1. Role of the Family : 3-4 pgs. In this section, you should focus on the role that family plays in promoting social competence in children. Remember that children bring their own temperament and personalities to the interaction, so you should discuss how parenting may vary as a function of a child’s characteristics. This section should include: 1. Choose three to four aspects of parenting that you think are important (e.g., discipline, attachment, praise, communication, setting limits, chores/work, play), and describe each aspect in detail. 2. Discuss what types of positive child behaviors are promoted by using these various parenting approaches (moral reasoning, emotional regulation, communication, etc) paying particular attention to the bidirectional nature of the parent-child relationship. 3. Explain how or why each aspect of parenting would lead to those outcomes (modeling, opportunity to practice skills, expectation of rewards/avoid punishment, etc). **These are simply examples; there are many more aspects of parenting, outcomes, and explanations!** CONCLUSION– Also, I have a rubric as a PDF file that I would like to upload to you, I believe it will help A LOT with understanding the requirements of the paper. Our teacher wants us to use a specific text book as a reference, I called your support line and they said that you might have the book available to you. The book is: “Child Development, By Laura Berk (2008). 8th ed. Allyn & Bacon.” (Any Child Development book by Laura Berk would work!) If at all possible please use this book, if you cannot find it, I can add references later!
