[pewslideshow slidename=anim2]

I carried out a Health Promotion Intervention project (The Title was: – A health promotion intervention to increase awareness on the health risks associated with alcohol abuse among London Metropolitan University Undergraduate Students, aged (18-40) at London University. I have done a power point presentation which you will find in the attached slides)
PLEASE NOTE: Write a report of this intervention. Your REPORT must provide adequate information about: – the initiative; rationale for choosing the topic; characteristics of the target group; clear aims and objectives. Explain how these relate to health promotion theory. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the methods used to implement the plan. Demonstrate evidence-based practice through process and outcome evaluation.
More specifically, the sub-titles of your report should reflect the following:
a) Introduction and rationale for selecting the topic and the target group.
a) Specific aims and objectives of the initiative. (Aims are the long-term goals. Objectives are the short-term goals, these should show what the recipients are expected to know, or feel, or do).
b) Review of relevant literature. Theories of health promotion. Advantages and disadvantages of various health promotion methods and approaches. Discussion about international, national, and local health promoting policies.
c) A brief description of the contents of the talk and video display,
d) Discussion about the methods/approaches adopted.
e) Explanation of the methods used for evaluation during and after the activity.
f) Suggest recommendations for future health promotion initiatives.
g) A bibliography of all references cited in your report and details of relevant printed material. Brief appendices may be included.

This module focuses on the local, national and international perspectives of health promotion. The World Health Organisation’s proposals for ‘Health for All’ provide a useful basis for comparison with local initiatives. Social, political and economic factors influencing health choices and the impact of recent legislative changes shall be examined.
Current developments in UK health promotion related to changes in society will be examined. The module shall use examples from current practice to debate and evaluate a range of health promotion strategies and targets. This module will is delivered through lectures and interactive workshops aimed at enhancing the exploration and understanding of some practical aspects of health promotion. Opportunity would be provided for student centred activities, outside visits and self-directed study.
Module Aims.
The module aims to:
Explore the main principles underlying health promotion

A hypothetical report of an intervention is below for you to see how i will want my written
THIS IS AN EXAMPLE BASED ON THE EDUCATIONAL APPROACH. IF YOU USE A DIFFERENT APPROACH, SOME ELEMENTS MIGHT BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT – THIS IS NOT REAL. JUST AN EXAMPLE OR GUIDE AS YOU WRITE YOUR REPORT.

TITLE:
Promoting walking among undergraduate students on a health promotion programme in London Met University.

INTRODUCTION:
? A few sentences explaining your topic in general terms
? What is this intervention about???
? Where did you do it?
? How did you do it?
? General layout of your report
Remember to write in prose form – bullet-points are only used here for example

RATIONALE:
• This should be an opportunity to emphasise the reasons for this intervention in great detail.

For instance,
? What are the health implications of non-walking among UG Health Promotion students
? How serious a problem is this phenomenon in comparison with other ‘unhealthy’ behaviours?
? Who is most affected by this problem?
? What attempts have been made to address this problem among university students previously?
? Your rationale could then be based on the failure of previous attempts to address this health need among university students (For example: “Previous interventions addressing unhealthy lifestyles of university students have considered access to gyms and smoking cessation but significant gaps exist in relation to promoting walking among university students……………………. This intervention is therefore designed to address this public health need in a London Met Health Promotion undergraduate cohort).

Remember to write in prose form – bullet-points are only used here for example
Be factual! Use real statistical figures to support your claims!

AIM:

The aim of this mini-Health Promotion project is to promote healthy walking among undergraduate students on a health promotion programme in a North London campus of the Londonmet University.

State your aim in a very plain and simple way. See example above. The aim has to relate to the title and the rationale!

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the intervention, all participants should be able to:

1. Identify seven health benefits of walking

2. State four health risks associated with incessant use of lifts between lectures

3. Identify six safety practices in walking

Do not write your objectives in prose form! Use bullet-points here for clarity!
Remember to link your objectives to your AIM, TITLE AND RATIONALE AND APPROACH.
For instance, if you have an educational aim, and approach, your objectives would have to be educational. See class notes for week 2and the seminar notes for the same week.

REVIEW OF RELEVANT LITERATURE

? Consider at least 8 (I suggest you look at many more) relevant academic articles in relation to the subject/tile of your intervention ( EXAMPLE: 12 academic articles about walking are considered in this literature review section)

? Consider how the different authorities define the problem you intend to solve – initially take an objective position. It is important that you write this section in the third person narrative (EXAMPLE: This intervention would consider definitions of walking from all key articles considered. Areas of parity or disagreement would also be considered)

? Discuss their views on some key areas of your work. I suggest you refer to your objectives at this stage and consider how each of the items are discussed in literature (EXAMPLE: I might chose to discuss relevant academic literature in relation to the three key objectives I have identified above – i.e. the health benefits of walking; health risks associated with incessant use of lifts; safety practices in walking. Remember this is just an example!)

? What are the agreements and disagreements about the different areas (linked to your objectives) considered in the papers? (EXAMPLE: in the papers you review, you could look at areas of agreement where most or some of the authors agree on an opinion and areas of disagreement where some or most disagree about an issue and discuss these differences. For my example this could be disagreements about the use of lifts for exercise! Just an example)

? What gaps in intervention have been identified in a majority of the papers considered? (When summarising the findings from all the papers considered, it would be useful to identify areas where:

? there have been no previous intervention e.g. walking among university students
? the health needs of students have not been sufficiently addressed in the past e.g. walking among university students.
? there has been a lot of activity / interventions in the past whose positive outcome you feel might be transferable to your target group

? Is your intervention covering this area of need? (Example: Show how your intervention covers this area of need)

You should also discuss:
• any benefits of walking in literature
• Advantages and disadvantages of various health promotion methods and approaches.
• International, national, and local health promoting policies.

Remember to write in prose form – bullet-points are only used here for example

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENTS OF THE TALK, DISPLAY, LEAFLETS OR OTHER RESOURCES.

This section should be a discussion of the issues covered in your intervention

METHODS (You may choose to combine methods with your discussion of CONTENTS OF THE TALK):
• State number of participants and if necessary, their age range

• Show how and why you employed the educational approach (you may have used a different approach. This is an example) and compare this with other approaches justifying why this is the best approach/model for achieving your objectives

• Discuss the processes involved. For example how you carried out:
• a structured questionnaire pilot survey to identify the baseline knowledge level of your target group (what are the benefits and demerits of using questionnaires in this way???) Remember this considers knowledge level because my intervention in this example is based on the educational approach.

• your intervention which consists of a health talk/ leaflet distribution to 10 students e.t.c. on the health promotion programme in London Met (you need to justify why 10 – for instance say if you chose 10 students because of the constraints of time)

• evaluated or measured the outcomes of your intervention to find out if your stated OBJECTIVES above have been satisfied – for example through comparing the responses of your target group before your intervention with responses after your intervention
• Your last questionnaire should ask the same questions asked the first time to see if there are now more people with the right answers (for the educational approach)
• State how potential ethical issues / concerns were addressed
Write in prose form – bullet-points are only used here for example

RESULTS:
What happened?? How many people in your target group (percentage %) knew any of the questions before and after your intervention. Which of the questions did people answer correctly or wrongly the most???
Write in prose form – bullet-points only used for example

Evaluation of the health promotion mini-project to promote walking among undergraduate students in London Met

Table 1- Pre-intervention

Objectives – target group (10)
n %
Identify seven health benefits of walking

6
60
State four health risks associated with incessant use of lifts between lectures
5 50
Identify six safety practices in walking
5 50

Table 2: Post-intervention

Objectives – target group (10)
n %
Identify seven health benefits of walking

10 100
State four health risks associated with incessant use of lifts between lectures
8 80
Identify six safety practices in walking
10 100

DISCUSSION:
Discuss your results.
? For instance, did more people know answers to the first objective??? (i.e. knowing the health benefits of walking for health?? How many out of the 10??? For instance, if initially only six could answer question 1 correctly?
? , then it means only sixty percent of people had any knowledge about the health benefits of walking to health at baseline.

? ALSO, what is the difference between the number of respondents who can now answer question 1 at the inception and people who could at the end??? Say if 10 people are now able to answer question 1 correctly, then it’s likely there has been about 40% increase in knowledge among your participants for this objective.

? How do these outcomes relate to the popular opinion on these matters in academic literature?

? REPEAT THE PROCESS FOR ALL YOUR OBJECTIVES – 2 & 3

Write in prose form – bullet-points only used here for example
You may combine results and discussion section
EVALUATION DURING AND AFTER THE ACTIVITY
? What evaluation methods were used??? I used structured questionnaires before and after the intervention consisting of (questions designed around my three key objectives above)

Write in prose form – bullet-points only used for example.
Remember to write in the third person narrative here
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE HEALTH PROMOTION
? What should people note for the future??
? Did you meet your objectives??? What could be the reasons (what is in published literature??? Does your result agree up with current literature in this area??)
Write in prose form – bullet-points only used for example
